Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness explained

At some stage in their lives many men develop male pattern baldness, a type of   hair loss.  The condition begins with a receeding hair from the front and then the hair begins to thin on the top of the head.  Gradually a  bald patch develops on top of the head when the receding front and the bald patch on top of the head joins together.

When male pattern baldness develop, some men go completely bald with no hair at all.  However in some men male pattern baldness usually leaves a  rim of hair around the back and sides of the scalp.

Male pattern baldness happens nearly to all men by the time they reach 60 although some men lose their hair earlier in their lives.

Causes of male pattern baldness

Male pattern baldnes occurs when the hair follicles on the scalp gradually become smaller than normal and causes the hair to become thinner and eventually fall off.  It is known that male hormones are involved in causing these changes in the hair follicles and eventual male pattern baldness.  The level of testosterone in bald men  is also known to be related to the causes of male pattern baldnes.  However different hair follicles are affected differently by the level testosterone in men.  It is not clear why this is the case but that explains why the balding process is more gradual in some men than others.  It is also generally believed there is some genetic factors involved in the causes of male pettern baldness.  The funny thing is that male pattern baldness does not affect the hair under the ampit and other areas of the body.

Treatment for male pattern baldness
The begining of  male pattern baldness can be distressing to some people but to other people it is just a normal part of growing older as a man.  Thus there are those who would seek treatment and those who won’t.  For those who need treatment, especially men who had the male pattern baldness earlier in their lives, there is help.

The three main options are medication, hair transplant and the use of wigs.  We feature on this website some of the medications one can use to help stop male pattern baldness.
